2. First ever fandom/fic/pairing?

Years ago I was curious about the world of Stargate, so I went online to see if there were others who liked it and stumbled upon fanfiction at an SG1 forum. There was this guy who wrote amazing SG1 fanfic (I can't remember his name and he wrote long, plotty, gen fics), but because of a thread there where people were bashing slash fic (which this guy didn't write, but didn't bash and ended up defending), I became curious about what slash fic was. I hadn't read a ton of gen fic yet, but enough to realize I loved fanfic.

Anyway, searching for slash fic opened up a whole world to me because what I'd been doing with characters in my head for years, other people were doing the same and posting it! I read A LOT of SG1 slash fic and as much femmeslash as I could get my hands on. My favorite pairing was Jack/Daniel, but I really liked Janet paired with OFCs or Sam. I'm not a huge Sam fan, but it was worth it when she was paired with Janet. There were a few Daniel/Janet fics I really liked too.

From there I started branching out to see if other shows were involved in this wonderful world of fanfic. I believe my next fandom was either X-Files or Star Trek, but I focused a little more on X-Files, both of which I still read.

Tomorrow: 3. What's your favorite genre to read/write?

That's funny that stargate was your in, i used to hang out at hitchhikers guide to the galaxy a lot, and one day I saw someone there had a link on their user page that said "my fanfic" -- and when i clicked it was Jack/Daniel fic, I'd never seen fanfic before, and while SG1 wasn't my thing then, i immediatley googled for BTVS fic and found AFF.net and ff.net and from there a quick jump to lj.

Were you a romo or a noromo in X-files, got to admit I mostly avoided those wars, being on the slash side, but I remember how batshit people could get over it -- honestly the spn shipwars are almost mild compared to them.

We can both blame Stargate - that's awesome! I first got sucked into the Yahoo! message boards, which really sucked because the system is so flawed. I soon found fanfic forums, and quickly after that LJ.

I really liked the platonic relationship between Mulder and Scully, but I didn't have a problem with fans writing M/S romance. I stopped going to one of the forums years ago because of the epic fights. I just don't care. If somebody likes something, they should be able to like it without shoving it in everyone's face or having anybody give them a hard time for it.

I really liked both Kyrcek and Skinner, so I read quite a lot of that pairing. Even if they weren't the pairing, I'd read fic just because they had large parts. Mulder is great, love fic about him, but Skinner and Kyrcek were more of a draw for me when it came to fic. I didn't like how most people wrote Scully. She can be a stick-in-the-mud, but people just seemed to make her a horrible bitch most of the time!

And yeah, the SPN shipwars have a long way to go before they reach levels of X-Files :D

Aw.. X-Files slash does bring back some good memories, i spent a lot of time at the basement and all things rat -- I was a Mulder girl who pretty much shipped Mulder/Skinner, Mulder/Krycek, or all three of them, with a little Mulder/Doggett when I could find it. [community profile] philedom is the dreamwidth comm, though it's gone quiet again, [livejournal.com profile] xf_book_club is still active here on lj, but most of the x-files comms I follow haven't updated in a long time.

I liked fic where Scully got treated well, and at least vaguely resembled her canon character, but there was so much scully bashing or superscully fic that it was hard to find a good balance.

I've still got a few active yahoo groups, but the daily digests are much shorter now, and lots are inactive. Though one writer who had a member's only group just started up again after a nearly 5 year gap, so there's always hope.

Hi! Here via the [livejournal.com profile] xf_book_club. Who restarted their members-only group? I'm not in the group or I assume I'd know but I might know the writer.

She was a multifandom writer edahsl, it was always a small group, but she's started writing again, and it was just a real surprise to suddenly get a notification from that group

Thanks again for the links! And yeah, I've spent a lot of time at The Basement, All Things Rat, Squidge, Mulder Torture, etc.

I posted a bunch of links for someone a while back because they were new to X-Files fanfic and wanted suggestions: X-Files Links (http://mayalaen.livejournal.com/3930.html), so those were a few of my favorites :)

I was never a fan of Doggett, though I'm not the type to bash people, so I did read fic with him in it, they just weren't my favorites. I really like femmeslash too, so anything involving Scully, Reyes, and Marita were quickly devoured.

That's a great rec list, so many familiar names like Xanthe, and FHSA, one thing I always loved about the basement compared to gossamer was that it was a much easier place to read.
