do you know why old people are grouchy?
because i now know why old people are grouchy
my dad had me late in life so taking care of him began 20 years before I thought it would

They're grouchy because. Every. Single. Thing. you try to do medically is so so so much longer, more difficult, and ridiculous than you can even imagine

Want to pick up meds once or maybe even twice a month instead of every other day? Sorry, nobody connects with each other and 8 million doctors who all have their own schedules and systems somehow can’t coordinate with pharmacies even though everything is digital now

if ya wanna read more of my whining it’s below the cut

Want to get lab work done? I’m going on 8 weeks now of trying to get my mom’s labs done and finally today (after talking to someone in the office twice a week for the 8 weeks) told me that oh well you can just ask the lab to contact us we actually can’t give you a copy of the request like you’re asking for. NO ONE ELSE TOLD ME THIS.

In the meantime multiple doctors are threatening to NOT refill her meds because she hasn’t gotten her lab work done yet.

Want a referral? If you can get a doc’s office to send one, they’ll send it to 50 wrong offices before they send it to the right one. That’s IF they send the right info for the right specialty.

Want new CPAP or BiPAP supplies like they tell you that you need regularly? I’m going on 2.5 years of trying to get my mom’s doc to send the actual rightly-worded request to the insurance company. So she still doesn’t have new supplies even though it’s been 2.5 years and the insurance company, doc’s office, and sleep center all can easily see she’s using it every night faithfully.

Her doc recently sent the third request, and it’s still not worded correctly to allow the insurance company to replace ALL her stuff, only a few things. So now we have to call her doc again and tell them EXACTLY what to say. Like they don’t know this? You have NO OTHER patients that need these requests so you have no clue how to properly request them?!

Want test results shared with all your doctors? Sorry but no one can communicate with anybody else AND you’re not allowed to physically take the results from one place to another even though they’re YOUR results

Want to change insurance coverage? It takes 3-6 months no matter what company you change to or from, and in the 3-6 months it took to get the three old farts in my family on better insurance, they charged me every month AND the new companies charged me. Since it’s illegal to charge someone twice for two different medical coverage plans, they will refund you, but you have to send proof and call them and talk them through it and it takes 3 months for them to refund you even after they’ve stopped charging you.

Granted medical stuff in the US is hard even for younger people, but the difference is older people have a lot more issues to take care of, more meds, more specialists, etc.

Also I can literally watch the difference in the care my 75yo dad receives vs my 65yo mom vs the care I receive. Once you hit 70, they make it much harder to do anything, and they don’t bother hiding the fact they don’t care as much.

Now I’d like my dad to not be around anymore myself, but making me jump through hoops constantly just to care for him only endangers his life in that I’m THIS much closer to stabbing him and his docs on a daily basis.

I swear the whole medical system is geared toward frustrating you to the point where you just give up so they don’t have to cover anything or do anything for you.

I’m grouchy just dealing with all this and I’m not as old as them, my cognitive ability is still sharp, and I have the patience and tenacity to follow through.

I can’t imagine the average old fart putting up with THIS much shit just to have their basic medical issues taken care of.

My parents don’t even have huge huge issues. My dad has an easily-controllable heart rhythm irregularity and recently has had a ringworm flareup but that’s it! My mom has T-cell lymphoma, high cholesterol, gout, and high BP, but they’re all easily controlled on minimal meds.

It’s enough to make you think you’re crazier than you are.

This is why I want to retire to Europe. I'm 41 and had some health issues to take care of this past year and it was exhausting. I can't imagine how much worse it would be when I'm even older and more tired!

My husband is from Belgium and he was completely horrified by the cost of schools here and medical care.
