Charlie (my uncle) texted me the other day and asked me to look at a site. It’s a place kind of like Craigslist or Offer Up but strictly for vehicles.
I checked it out and it seemed really sketchy. It hadn’t been up a super long time, I couldn’t find reviews or Better Business Bureau information on it, which always gets me nervous, but I was able to find a couple car enthusiast forums where they were talking about it.
There were multiple posts on both forums about how, if you use this service, you transfer the money via bank, it gets held in a sort of escrow by the site, and after the car has been delivered to you and you’ve checked it out, you message the site to rate the buyer, and if all went well, then your money goes to the seller.
He found a car he wanted that he thought was a diamond in the rough. He does that all the time -- finds them everywhere, goes all over the country to get them, and is able to sell them for at least twice what he bought them for. He’s good at finding treasures people don’t realize are worth anything, especially if all they need is a few parts to fix it up. But on the forums the car enthusiasts were very adamant that vehicles sold on that site for exactly what they were worth -- no diamond in the rough scenarios.
Anyway, I told him the site felt really sketchy, and even though there were people on the forums who were talking about how great it was, I personally wouldn’t do it because it was just TOO sketchy. Ya know how some things just are a little off and it rubs you the wrong way? Yeah.
Instead of taking my advice, he took $6500 out of our shared account and did it.
Okay, so I was a little pissed, but I figured oh well, he’ll probably be able to sell it for a little more than that, so no harm no foul, right?
Three days after the money went into the “escrow” account, the entire site shut down, as did the two forums and a few other sites that mentioned that original site. THEY WERE ALL OWNED BY THE SAME SCAMMER.
Seriously this guy put some effort into this. At least five separate sites, including two entire forums with comments and pictures and history that went back two years.
And that’s how I lost $6500 last week.
